Description:  The majestic Mountain of the Sun rises 2,700 feet above the floor of Zion Canyon.   The painting was painted in November during the last day of the Zion Plein Air Art Invitational as all the artists gathered on the lawn in front of Zion Lodge for a public paint out.  During the paint out, the public watched each of the artists produce their works and then voted for the people’s choice award.  I was fortunate to receive the award as a result of this piece.  However, I was nowhere near complete at the end of the event so I took the painting behind Zion Lodge to find a quiet place with a different foreground perspective which included framing by the purplish black shapes of the deeply shadowed cottonwood trees creating a cathedral-like window view framing the richly colored textures of the mountain.
