Off the Path represents one of those wonderful autumn afternoons on the shore of Lake Michigan. This is the kind of day where it is so nice to sit for hours and enjoy the sight and sounds of the “big lake”. As a painter, it is my desire to share a sense of this fabulous part of nature with others, not just what it looks like, but what it feels like too.
To achieve a sense of feeling involves many aspects that go beyond rendering like a photograph. Design and the physical qualities of paint help to bring an emotive quality to the work. I chose a circular composition with a strong horizontal in the middle. The sand shadows, tree and cloud shapes behave like a “hug” around the horizon, creating a sense of calm. With this as my starting point I then proceeded with many layers of paint making marks and deconstructing them to work at a suggestion of reality and light. The physical quality of paint when viewed up close and from a distance helps to bring the painting alive.
